kick the can down the road

Last Thursday, the Federal Reserve tripled down on failed policy.  According to Twitchy, the US will “stimulate” the Demise by purchasing $40 billion in mortgage debt monthly.  When you wake up one day in the not too distant future, asking yourself “what happened?”, remember that Ben Shalom Bernanke was a big piece of the puzzle.

generational thief

willful neglect of Israel

As Jeffrey Goldberg reports at the Atlantic, the Obama Administration continues to slight our dear ally Israel exactly when fortitude is called for. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears completely fed up. Can we blame him or the Israelis?

Mr. President, your treatment of Israel has been shameful.

I stand firmly for Israel, and I am ashamed that my country has ignored the call under Obama’s direction. I pray we correct this injustice soon.

Open thread: Despicable divisiveness

I am opening this thread on August 17, 2012, and I pray that I’ll be able to close it in my lifetime.  I am sick, sick, sick of race baiting, Balkanization, false divisiveness, vicious dishonesty, and bigotry accusations from the mouths of bigots. I hope that we Americans retire these rot peddlers into the putrid history bin marked “contempt”.

tolerance, unless…

2012-11-06, Bill Press earns his faux tolerance repeat offender stripes on uncleham.

2012-11-06, Michael Moore spouts ignorant, unfounded racist accusations on HuffPost Live (HPL hosts were Ahmed Shihab-Eldin and Zach Carter). This exchange is such a stunning hack job by all three participants that it must be seen to be believed:
HPL, AS-E: “A lot of people on the mainstream media you watch it when race does come up they talk about how Republicans are kinda doubling down on the white electorate they… they’re claiming that Latinos aren’t going to the polls, so on, so forth. Why does division… I mean, do you think race is… is overlooked in terms of, uh, how significant a role it plays?”
Moore: “People are really uncomfortable to wanna… to say it. Uh, even just before we went on, y’know I was… I was [smile, hand waving] using some euphemism…”
HPL, AS-E: “right”
Moore: “Uh, to avoid having to say what I think a lot of us know to be the truth. And it’s not to say that all Republicans are racist, uh, or people who voted for Romney are racist, I don’t believe that, but I do believe that hate is a huge motivator on… on Romney’s side. And they have manipulated that, and exploited it as best they can to try and get people out to get rid of Barack Obama. Not so much that… that they’re for Romney, but to get rid of… of Obama.”
HPL, ZC: “We’ve heard… that… that Welfare ad that… that he was running for a very long time…”
Moore: “Yeah, exactly”
HPL, ZC: “…I think that was clearly [inaudible]”
Moore: “no, they know exactly what they’re doing”
[Cut/Splice in original HuffPost video]
HPL, ZC: “Well, I guess I’m curious, ’cause I understand the… the psychology behind [smile, hand waving] like a ruling class landowner from… from the 18th century, but… but these groups like True the Vote, this sortof like Minutemen-esque, sortof grass roots voter suppression, uh-uh-uh movement that’s going… I mean where does that come from? Is that… that something that… that you think of as being relatively new and unique, or do you see this as a… a y’know trans-historical phenomenon?
Moore: “I think… I think it’s been with us for a very long time, and… and that, um, that kindof harassment and intimidation has come in many forms over the years. And today, it’s in the form of… I don’t know how many… [pause, swallow, more handwaving] they claim to have hundreds of thousands of people at the polls. They’re gonna try and stop as many people… look like they’re gonna vote for Obama uh, as possible. Umm…”
HPL, AS-E: “By that you mean people of color, perhaps? Minorities, I dunno [smiling]? Latinos [large smile]?”
[all three share a good laugh]
Moore [chuckling throughout his answer]: “I-I-I-I… that was… that was… that was a… that was a polite way of saying…”
HPL, AS-E [still smiling]: “…potentially”
Moore: “…[laugh pause] there’s a group of racists standing at the polling booths, looking… [waves hands]”
HPL, ZC: “Doesn’t that shock you, though? I mean, it’s 2012. I mean, IT IS 2012, and we’re doing this Jim Crow stuff.”
Moore: “No…”
HPL, AS-E: “We’re also talking about abortion in 2012. [smiling]”
Moore: “But listen, I… guys, um, I… I lived in a time… I have a memory as a child of seeing a sign on a restroom door that said ‘whites only.’ I mean, that’s in my lifetime, and look how young I am. So I mean, it [laughs]… it wasn’t that long ago.”

2012-11-06, update on Joseph Lowery, unapologetic racist (see below): he’ll be sharing company with President Obama and the First Lady tonight in Chicago, watching voting returns (sources: Washington Examiner, Weasel Zippers)

2012-11-06, Anonymous Coward Racist broke federal law and put flyers from a non-existent Tea Party group in mailboxes in Medina County, Ohio. One side said ‘ROMNEY MUST WIN / THE N—– OBAMA MUST LOSE / DEMOCRATES (sic) AND THE N—–S WANT TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY AS WE KNOW IT / GET OUT AND VOTE / GOD IS ON OUR SIDE / THE NRA IS BEHIND YOU / BE PREPARED / BE ARMED’. The other side said ‘THANK YOU FOR HELPING US DEFEND “WHITE AMERICA” BY DEFEATING THE N—– IN OUR “WHITE HOUSE”. / PLEASE CONSIDER SUPPORTING THE ENTIRE REPUBLICAN TICKET TO HELP OUR COUNTRY STAY STRONG AND WHITE. / THE NRA KNOWS THAT THE N—–S WANT TO CONTROL OUR COUNTRY. / BE PREPARED / BE ARMED / MCTP’ (sources: Breitbart, Weasel Zippers)

Happy 70th, Dad!

Happy 70th to Marshall’s and my wonderful Dad today. One of my first memories was him holding me up at the nursery window at the University of Virginia Hospital to meet my new brother – I distinctly remember declaring “We’ll keep him!” He mesmerized me at the dinner table with his invisible ball into the paper bag trick (I never did figure it out). In our youth, Dad took us on countless camping trips (much to Mom’s chagrin) along the Skyline Drive, where Marshall and I could ride bikes to our heart’s content (a love that endures for both of us). On a family trip up north, we stopped at a tourist spot (I believe it was Gravity Hill in PA) where the guide collected our fee and asked us to stop and put our car in neutral so it could “roll uphill”. Dad was spitting mad just a few seconds into the excursion, throwing the car back into drive and peeling away from that bleeping tourist trap!

Love you, Dad! Hapsy Birfsday!

Dad turned around the disfunctional Scout troop he inherited, and was my only Scoutmaster. He was tapped for OA before I was. He made sure that I stayed gainfully employed as a youth, whether that involved mowing our huge lawn or giving me “that job” working for his masonry company that solidified my desire to stay in school.

Dad has a work ethic that I can only aspire to. He was a tireless provider for our family, and sacrificed much to provide Marshall and me top-notch educations. He’s got a great sense of humor, and always has the grandkids and us in stitches. He’s flying home with Mom from California today from a visit with Marshall’s family, so safe travels! I’m looking forward to our trip together next month to bike the Virginia Creeper trail.

Happy Birthday, Dad. We love you very much!

Desperate? Guilty as charged.

Here’s a timely excerpt from the outstanding headline article over at American Thinker today by Geoffrey P. Hunt.  “Yes, we are desperate”:

Desperate to rescue a nation quickly devolving into an ungovernable economic catastrophe.  Desperate to repudiate a culture of  institutionalized dependency, where class envy substitutes for sweat equity.  Desperate to reclaim a society where individual achievement and initiative are admired, not punished.  Desperate to restore common decency in political discourse, where ideas triumph over ad hominems.  Desperate to avoid the “Road to Serfdom,” a looming certainty if Obama’s legacy prevails.

Root for Tony

Lloyd Marcus is rooting for the investor next door at American Thinker today. I’m with you, Lloyd. Please tell Tony there are a lot of us out here rooting for him, and please keep us posted on his progress.

Lloyd Marcus

Also, if you aren’t familiar with Lloyd, you’re missing one of my favorite American Thinker authors. Subscribe to Lloyd’s Facebook page, follow @LloydMarcus on Twitter, and read his blog. I just put his book on the top of my “to read” list. Go Lloyd, go Tony!

Communist dupes

Santa Cruz Bicycles has the “clever” Custom Color Choice Program logo up on their homepage, complete with Soviet-style artwork:

dumb nostalgia

Santa Cruz makes amazingly good bikes.  I had been looking forward to buying one for my midlife crisis as soon as I put a reasonable amount of miles on my Rumblefish to warrant the upgrade.  But just because Santa Cruz has misguided longing (caveat:  see their response below, even though I’m not buying it) for the good ol’ CCCP (which exterminated roughly 50 million human beings in the 20th century), I don’t suffer that same useful idiocy.  I will buy nothing from this company while it promotes such foolishness.

For those of you still open-minded enough to erase any notion of Soviet nostalgia, I recommend two excellent books:

  1. Dupes: How America’s Adversaries Have Manipulated Progressives for a Century“, by Paul Kengor (2010)
  2. Gulag: A History“, by Anne Applebaum (2003)

Update, 8/9/2012:  my brother received an email response to his complaint on this subject from Santa Cruz.  In part, it said

I think you may have misunderstood the underlying theme of this campaign.  It was not our intention to pay homage to, or make light of, the atrocities of the soviet communist regime, it was to parody the “CCCP” acronym by using it to mean the complete opposite of something it was previously associated with, a lack of choice.

In addition, they attached an earlier version of the artwork, which had a “much less subtle” tagline in the upper left hand side of the image:

ironic, right?

Parody?  I’m not buying it.  At best, this advertising campaign is in extremely poor taste.  By the logic given, why not name the campaign “Auschwitz!” with the implied tagline “Chill, brah!  We ain’t the Führer.  You get a choice!  LOLZ, don’t forget to dig the irony.”

safety net, my foot

Mark Levin welcomed Senator Jeff Sessions (AL) onto his July 19th show. Senator Sessions is currently investigating the Bush administration’s removal of the food stamp citizenship requirement in the early 2000’s. What floored me was Senator Sessions’ point that $800 billion has been torched on food stamps in the past 10 years.

Do-gooders call this a “safety net” (image hat tip tracasseur.com).  You and I get the bill at the point of a gun.

So I flat out don’t want to hear this “safety net” rot from you bleeding hearts. ~100 million taxpaying Americans paid ~$8,000 each for food stamps alone over the past decade?   And that’s only one out of umpteen wasteful Federal programs.  That is outrageously abusive spending that should insult all hardworking Americans.

Ah, summertime

Holding my wife’s hand,
reading in the dim glow of night mode,
fan purring white noise,
lids getting heavy now.

Are you terrible at math?

Hair on fire about Mitt’s tax returns?  Let me help you out:  Mitt has earned millions, $0 direct impact on you.  Obama has stolen & wasted trillions of your grandchildren’s yet earned money.  So Obama is very literally a million times worse, and infinitely worse if you have an ounce of intellectual honesty.
